Deep groove ball bearings are the most common type of rolling bearings and are available in both single and double row designs. Their applications is very wide. The raceway grooves on both the inner and outer rings have circular arcs of slightly larger radius than that of the balls. In addition to radial loads, axial loads can be imposed in either direction. Because of their low torque, they are highly suitable for applications where high speeds and low power loss are required.

In addition to open type bearings, these bearings often have steel shields or rubber seals installed on one or both sides and are pre-lubricated with grease. Shielded bearings are primarily intended for use in applications where the inner ring is to rotate. In cases where the outer ring of such bearings rotates, there is a risk that lubricant will be lost from the bearings at certain speeds.

Single row deep groove ball bearings are manufactured to normal tolerances and with normal radial internal clearance as standard. They are also available with radial internal clearance less or greater than normal. Double row deep groove ball bearings are manufactured to normal tolerances only and are supplied as standard with normal radial internal clearance. Also, snap rings are sometimes used on the periphery. Snap rings fitted to deep groove ball bearings with snap ring groove provide a simple and space saving means of axially locating the bearing in the housing. Pressed steel cages are the most common type.
